Visual Basic 4.0 offers a wide range of options for the developer looking to create a great client/server application. The issue is that you must consider what you want the application to do and then select the appropriate data access method. It's not all hit and miss though, Visual Basic 4.0 offers a tool called Data Access Explorer. This tool allows you to compare the different access methods for performance and impact on the server. This application, unless it changed in the release version, by default only supports SQL Server. A number of developers I know have enabled it for other databases using RDO and ODBC.
