Q. I wonder if there is a simple solution to this problem. I mess about with VB, Access, and Powerbuilder, so the one with the best solution may determine the tool for the whole project.

I want to have a form in an app in which the end-user can draw areas on (say) a rectangular background. For a floor in an office this might represent desks, work areas, etc. Ideally each of these areas could be set to a distinctive colour and some text appear in the area. It would be nice if the shape of the area could be defined by the user - i.e. not just rectangles.

Having created their map the user would then be able to click on an area and the program would detect which area had been clicked on to access the appropriate data.

Do you know of any VBX/OCX or other add-ons which would give this facility short of going for full GIS facility (in which case only a tiny amount of its full functionality would be required). A VBX would be ideal as much of the target market would be using gear with limited grunt.

A. 'MetaDraw' by Bennet-Tec is a Metafile viewer which allows you to insert pre-defined objects within its container. These objects can be manipulated at runtime. Bennet-Tec's web page can be found at www.bennet-tec.com.
